Matthew Chapter 1

Matthew 1: 18-24 (An Angel of the Lord appears to Joseph in a dream)

  • 18) This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about. His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.  19) Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.  20) But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.  21) She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”  22) All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet;  23) “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).  24) When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.

Matthew 5:17-20 – (Fulfillment of the Law)

  • 17) “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.  18) For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.  19) “Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.  20) For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.”

Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.  17) But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,  18) so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Matthew Chapter 14

Matthew 14:13-20 (Jesus feed five thousand)

Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”  16) Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”  17) We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.  18) “Bring them here to me,” he said.  19) And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.  20) They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
