The Story of Abraham in the Bible
A Brief Introduction
Introduction
The author was recently asked by a young lady, “If I was going to start reading the Bible, where should I begin?” I responded, “Genesis.”
Obviously, every word of every verse of every chapter of every book in the Bible is of utmost importance. However, I found myself pointing her to not only the first book of the Bible, Genesis, but specifically to the story of Abraham. Why? “Because,” I continued, “In order to truly grasp the current events of the world in which we live today, one must first have the correct understanding of the Death, Burial and Resurrection of Jesus Christ in The New Testament. One must also have a grasp on the teachings of the Epistles from Paul and the other apostles, which contain so many historical and Spiritual wisdom about this man named Abraham.
That’s when I, too, realized exactly what I needed to do next here at The Potter’s Blogger. Which is to provide an extensive study of Abraham, connecting the story of Abraham in The Old Testament to the teachings of Abraham in The New Testament. And God Willing, that’s exactly what I’m going to do.
Therefore, please allow me to give a quick summary on the teachings you will soon receive on the life of Abraham.
Brief Summary
Though in an earlier article from August, 2025, I provided many basic facts, timelines and Scripture references about Abraham in the Bible, there is a plethora of information left to teach.
For example, did you know the religions of Judaism, Christianity and Muslims, all consider Abraham to be their 1st prophet? Were you aware from Adam to Abraham is 1,948 years, and the Jews became a modern nation on May 14th, 1948?
Inasmuch, wouldn’t you like to know:
- Exactly what Abraham was thinking when preparing to sacrifice his son, Isaac, to the Lord?
- Why Christians refer to Abraham as “The Father of Faith?”
- That Jesus, John the Baptist, the Apostle Paul and Apostle John each made statements to the Jews and Jewish leaders as to whom the real Children of Abraham are?
- To whom the Promise of God about Abraham’s “Seed” was actually referring?
Well get ready! Because God willing, you will discover the answers to these questions along with many, many more answers to questions you’ve always had about the importance of the man named, Abraham.

- At the age of 99, Abram was renamed Abraham by God, when He said, “No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.” (Genesis 17:5)

- Sarai was renamed Sarah by God, when, “God also said to Abraham, ‘As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah.'” (Genesis 17:15)

Father of Many Nations
When God renamed Abram, giving him the name, Abraham, He said, “For I have made you a father of many nations.”Â
As I previously stated there are 3 religions (or 3 Peoples) on earth who claim Abraham to be their first profit, or the Father of their religion.
Inasmuch, a quick Google search reveals as of 2025, there are approximately 8.2 billion people currently living on the planet. When diving a little deeper in your research you will also discover of those 8.2 billion people, approximately:
- 15.7 Million are Jews
- 2.4 – 2.6 Billion are Christians
- 2.05 Billion are Muslims
Therefore we see the fulfillment of God’s statement to Abraham, that He had/has most definitely made him into the “Father of many nations.” For, of the 8.2 billion humans currently living on planet Earth, over half are affiliated with one of the 3 groups/nations of people just mentioned.
Genealogy
Therefore, the lessons that follow will be the story of Abraham from the Christian Bible and perspective. And though I will go into much more detail about Abraham’s genealogy later, the graph I’ve provided below is definitely a good start. It’s the genealogy starting with Abraham, leading us to the Promised “Seed,” who is Christ.
Below you will discover that:
- Abraham had a son named Isaac
- Isaac had a son named Jacob
- God renamed Jacob, Israel. And Israel had 12 sons in the order of: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph and Benjamin. These 12 Sons become the 12 Tribes of Israel.
